Are you haunted by memories of a past trauma?
And not just reliving, but re-experiencing the event in every, emotional detail?
Are you tired of fearing emotional triggers?
If this describes you, EMDR can help.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps the brain reprocess information so a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings when events are brought to mind. It stops people from experiencing emotional distress from past experiences by properly filing the experience(s) that are causing problems.
How Does EMDR Work?
Our brains have an elaborate filing system designed to store information. When a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily. This can cause the trauma to become “frozen in time.” Memories can feel as bad as going through it the first time because the images, sounds, smells, and feelings haven’t changed. Miss-processed memories have a lasting negative effect that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people.
It Sounds Complicated
EMDR is a simple, efficient form of therapy utilizing Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). BLS stimulates the same eye movements which occur during REM – Rapid Eye Movement – sleep. EMDR utilizes eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones to accelerate the brain’s capacity to process and heal troubling memories, thoughts, feelings, phobias, etc.
