Temperament Profile Assessments and Counseling
Temperament profile assessments are a central part of our counseling and coaching services. We have found the information in these reports to be of significant help to all our clients. On this page, we will explain what temperament profiles reveal and why the information is beneficial to you.
“For You created my inmost being: You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalms 139:13-14
Your Emotional Wiring
As you can see in the diagram, these people, events, stresses, and pressures trigger your emotions. Emotions then trigger thoughts and thoughts drive your behavior.
In addition to descriptions about your “hard wired” reactions, you’ll learn about your emotional needs and wants. You will also learn whether you are logic/task/process or emotion/people/feelings oriented.
Three Specific Categories
A Temperament Profile is not the same as personality profiles such as the Birkman, Meyers-Briggs, and others. Those profiles focus on outward behaviors and work/communication styles. We think they are important and recommend them for their intended purposes: understanding broad communication/work styles and building effective teams and company cultures.
We utilize Temperament Profiles because they go deeper and take into account that you react and response differently in different parts of your life. Your report will reveal your emotional needs/wants and preferences in three specific interpersonal categories:
- Inclusion – This category reveals how strongly you need and want to be included socially (inclusion). This is the part of your life involving co-workers, neighbors, acquaintances, and other “surface relationships.” It also reveals whether you are logic/task/process or emotion/people/feelings oriented.
- Control – This category explains your attitudes and approaches to dominance, direction, and drive. You’ll learn about the strength of your will and your decision making preferences and needs.
- Affection – This is the only category that is exclusively about person to person relationships. It reveals how open you are with expressions of love as well as your needs for love and affection. It also reveals whether you need a large or small number of close, intimate friends.
Note: the temperament report explains your emotional responses and your emotional needs and wants. It does not explain or excuse thoughts and behavior.
How This Benefits You
Understanding your emotional wiring in these categories will be a significant help. You’ll immediately understand which emotions to trust – strengths – and which emotions to question – weaknesses. You’ll experience greater self-confidence because of increased self-knowledge and awareness.
You’ll also experience:
- Better communication – once you understand your true needs and wants you’ll be better able to talk about them with the people in your life
- Stronger and healthier relationships – better communication will lead to better relationships and “win-win”results at home and at work
- Improved work results – you’ll focus on your strengths and better manage your weaknesses to you can work at your best
- Improved work/life balance – because you’ll know what recharges or drains you, you’ll have the confidence to order your life for better health and results
A crucial byproduct will be an understanding and appreciation for the emotional wiring of those around you. These insights, along with self-knowledge, can dramatically reduce misunderstandings, pain, and conflicts.
If You’re Interested
If you are interested in having the insights from your very own personal Temperament Profile, we can help in one of two ways:
- Counseling and Coaching: If you choose to see us for counseling or coaching, you will take a temperament assessment during your first session. We’ll discuss and use the results as we work towards your goals. If you haven’t already done so, you can read about our services by clicking the Services drop down at the top of the page.
- Temperament Profile Only: We are happy to provide the assessment and one session to discuss your results as a stand alone service. We do this for individuals and couples and it is a common and beneficial choice.
To schedule a Temperament Profile Only appointment:
- We’ll set-up a time for you to take the assessment test – a quick, 15 to 20 minute meeting is all we need.
- We’ll then schedule one session to go over the results. These meetings usually take between 90 minutes and two hours because of the amount of information.
